How To Pick The Best Time of Year to Cruise to Alaska

alaska cruise in april

Princess Cruises is an authorized concessioner of Glacier Bay National Park. On clear nights, you could have a chance to spot the northern lights — though they won't shine as brightly as they do in winter. Rather than stay up all night, see if your ship or pre- or post-cruise hotel has a sign-up sheet for people who want a wake-up call should the lights appear. Unless you booked early, cabin choice could be limited — especially if you are looking for a fancy suite or cheap inside cabin, which tend to be the first categories to sell out. Some adventurous cruisers will board ships when they arrive in Alaska in April to see the remnants of winter. A few big ships cruise into mid-October for those who want a peek at what life is like in Alaska towns when all the other tourists have returned home.

Alaska Weather in May:

Alaska is a thrilling cruise destination no matter which month you sail. Look to the early and late sailings of the season if you are a bargain seeker. Choose a May or June sailing for drier weather and fewer mosquitos; summer is the best time to cruise to see abundant marine life and birds. Cruise ships arrive in southeast Alaska in spring, stay the summer and linger only into early fall. The 49th state's snowy, cold and dark winters are not conducive to cruising. For cruise itineraries in Alaska, August high temperatures will be somewhere in the upper 50s and low 60s. We’ve reached the pinnacle of summer temperatures, and the rainier season has just begun. Small-ship Alaska cruise lines like American Queen Voyages and Uncruise can go further into narrow passages and get closer to shoreline wildlife like Dall sheep and bears. June is a smart choice for cruisers who don’t want to travel during peak season but want more opportunities. May is a practical choice for Alaskan cruisers who are on a limited budget but want to have slightly warmer and drier weather and more chances to see wildlife. Your views will likely include snowy mountains, but they are gorgeous nonetheless.

Alaska Is Less Crowded With Tourists In April

As the most discerning, up-to-the-minute voice in all things travel, Condé Nast Traveler is the global citizen’s bible and muse, offering both inspiration and vital intel. Named for the Northern compass point, Noordam is fitting for a cruise to Alaska. Museum-quality art outfits this ship, from oils to photographs of music legends. Check out our helpful checklist so that you know exactly what to pack for an Alaska cruise with Princess. From exploring historic gold mines to venturing in the footsteps of early explorers, learn about Alaska’s Inside Passage and discover the wonders awaiting you.

Alaska Souvenirs to Take Home With You So You Never Forget Your Trip Royal Caribbean Cruises

The warming weather allows cruise ships to travel through the Arctic waters providing unique opportunities for passengers. April is the driest and clearest month of the year and daylight effectively banishes darkness to the middle of the night. The retreating snowpack triggers the first green-up and exposes dry hiking routes near sea level.

The wildlife is doing the same, and you might spot bears with their cubs, moose with their calves and humpback whales returning from their winter home in Hawaii. In this post, I share a month-by-month guide about the best time of year for an Alaskan cruise. I’ve included tips on the weather, wildlife, daylight, and the general experience you’ll have each month of the Alaska cruise season to determine when to set sail for the 49th state. Where they’re all going is a destination rich in unparalleled wilderness, wildlife and native culture.

Either will be great for the plane or train or even your car depending on how you plan on traveling to Russia. And this world traveler adapter charges several devices at the same time. During my April visit, there were many exciting events to partake in, from spring carnival celebrations to native cultural festivals, such as the Alaska Folk Festival. On the plus side, the parks are less crowded and the scenery is stunning with the melting snow revealing the landscape beneath. The good news is, that most of the Alaskan National Parks are open in April.

What to Do in Alaska: Top Things to Do in June

These waterproof all-season shoes are extremely affordable and yet fashionable. I think that using these useful packing tips will enhance your trip when traveling to Ireland and help you remain organized while there. With the tourist high season (May-September) not yet kicked off. If you are thinking about going cruising here is my Alaska cruise packing list.

Alternatively, birders might want to time their cruise with the Copper River Shorebird Festival, which takes place early in May in Cordova. Check ahead to make sure your itinerary will stop here, as it's usually only featured on longer 14-day cruises to Alaska. Starting with a six-day sail out of Vancouver on May 11, the namesake of Celebrity Cruises’ popular Edge class will make its Alaskan debut with weeklong roundtrips from Seattle through Sept. 13. The 2,918-passenger vessel features a unique “outside-in” architecture that provides more floor-to-ceiling glass on the exterior and expanded outdoor spaces to soak up the Alaskan coastlines. Alaska is a checkmark for about three-quarters of all passengers headed there, according to the Alaska Tourism Industry Association, and the same can be said for two ships this season.

After a long winter, Alaska begins to wake up in April, and that includes the wildlife. A few big ships, such as the 4,000-passenger Norwegian Bliss out of Seattle, begin their season this month with discounted early season pricing. You’ll enjoy wildlife viewing, warmer temperatures, and daylight returns to more typical hours. However, the dry season has ended, so rainfall will begin to increase as the month progresses. Many small ship cruises begin operating, but with kids in school, you can still feel like Alaska is all yours. The Inside Passage remains the focus as many more cruise departures start in earnest, as well as opportunities for longer sailings from Seattle to Alaska, passing British Columbia along the way.

You’ll also have more hours to look for wildlife from your room window or veranda. Expect less activity and fewer shop openings in some smaller port towns in May since most summer workers are in college and won’t arrive until June. There are exciting marine animals that you can see this early in the Alaskan springtime. September weather in Alaska may be unpredictable but with the right preparation you can enjoy all the exciting events.

See how bald eagles and local bird populations receive first-class treatment at the Alaska Raptor Center. Encounter wildlife in their natural habitat at the Fortress of the Bear. Or experience the culture of Russian Alaska on a visit to St. Michael’s Russian Orthodox Church, and relive Native history at the Sheldon Jackson Museum. Travel the Inside Passage on 10 or 11-day Alaska cruises from San Francisco and allow the natural landscapes to inspire your day’s adventures. Begin by sailing beneath the Golden Gate Bridge and along the Pacific Coast. As you voyage into the Inside Passage, enjoy one of the best ways to explore the fjords, small towns and natural landmarks with your favorite people.

Find Norwegian Gem Cruises to the Caribbean with Prices

gem norwegian cruise reviews

More so than other ships we've cruised on, we found our fellow Gem passengers loved to talk to strangers, making for a very convivial atmosphere onboard. We never left - it has pools, a lazy river, lots of bars, restaurants and shopping, and my son's favorite activity of the whole trip - Monkey Island! He went through twice to play with the monkeys. If you don't want to cruise with alot of kids, cruise off season when the little darlings are in school.

gem norwegian cruise reviews

Gem review - very good and really bad!

Anyway, I do not cruise to lay on sun bed all day - there are plenty of things to do on sea days. This sparkling cruise ship is the perfect choice for year-round cruises in style. Sail to the The Caribbean, Bermuda, or Bahamas and toss your schedule to the breeze. Or stroll along postcard-perfect scenery in the Mediterranean. With tons of dining choices and no set dining times, Norwegian Gem has it all. Chill out by the pool, get lucky in the casino, unwind at the spa, and make the kids happy with spaces built with them in mind.

Mini-Suite with Balcony

Not enough seating in the buffet....it was bedlem and close to a riot at times! Appparently 1000 other people had the same timing idea as you! After the first day, we would scout for a free table first and one member in party would stay there until the rest of party go and get the food.

All come with nice, smart touches enhanced by a large picture window with clear views of the sea. A medical center staffed by a doctor and a nurse is located on deck 4 for medical emergencies. Room service is available at all times for an added charge.

Beautiful Ship - Great Food

The cuisine focuses on classic American meat, fish, poultry, and pasta dishes. We took a minibus to Horseshoe Bay and had a great day. We would have loved to have seen more of the port and done some shopping, but everything is SO FAR from the ship, we didn't end up having the time/energy after our day. In 2020, NCL recategorized fleetwide the Mini-Suite cabin category, renaming it to "Club Balcony Suite" and adding free perks. The change didn't affect the staterooms' deck locations or cabin numbers.

I usually deduct my kids tips as $50 - $60 per day (depending on which cruise line you are on) is just too much. I will definately travel with the GEM again, I never say never - but I think for a more sophisicated, calm holiday, a different cruise line is definately needed. This was so wrong on so many levels. I very much realize that, the comment about Spanish people was what I was referring to. I guess because I mentioned Spanish versus Hispanic you thought I didn't realize she was sailing in Europe. Danceman~ thanks for your informative review but...seems you did not do your homework BEFORE your cruised...

Passengers are predominantly from the U.S. and Canada. On longer cruises, the ship appeals to older passengers. On seven-night trips, and especially during school holiday seasons, it's dominated by families. Built in 2007 and refitted in 2015, Norwegian Gem ranks as an accessible ship with enough fun options to satisfy most cruisers. Open deck space is generous, and hardly a public room on the ship doesn't offer great views of the passing ocean or scenery. Nice of you to say this but I think you scared people too much with the bad points which is numerous and looked enough to outweigh the good points.

I preferred the ship to the Costa ships but it was also similar in many of the negative ways. If it hadn't been so crowded around the pools and buffet...i would be recommending it as very good value for money....but as it was, im more in the middle on it. I overheard two couples talking saying the ship was vulgar.....i did know what they meant when i looked at the sea of sprawling bodies around the pool, kids and burgers. And yet the ship does have some charm and innovative ideas that did impress me. Would i go again...yes for the right price but with an itinerary that attracted less of a cocktail of nationalities. A $20 service charge per person per day is added to all inside, outside, balcony, and mini-suite shipboard accounts; guests in full-size suites and The Haven are charged $25 per day per guest.

The Freestyle Daily newspaper, delivered to each cabin daily, lists a full complement of activities to engage in whether in port or at sea, including trivia games, cards, movies, bingo, auctions, dance classes, demonstrations, and duty-free shopping. Deck 6 is ‘Bar Centrale’— home to Magnum’s Champagne & Wine Bar, Maltings Beer & Whiskey Bar, and Shakers Martini & Cocktail Bar. Deck 8 features O’Sheehan’s Neighborhood Bar, while Deck 12 has the poolside Topsider’s Bar & Grill, and Deck 13 has the Bali Hai Bar, which overlooks the pool below, and the Sugarcane Mojito Bar, which is located in the Moderno Churrascaria restaurant. Also on Deck 13 is the Spinnaker Lounge, which is where partiers go to drink and dance into the night. The chance to drink without having to drive is one of the main draws of a cruise vacation, and the Gem doesn’t disappoint in this regard. There is a wide array of bar choices catering to specific tastes.

Accommodations range from the luxurious multi-room or romantic suites to spacious and affordable staterooms. Cruise Critic is not a booking agent and does not charge any service fees to users of our site. Taxes, fees and port expenses not included.

Ink 48 has a spectacular rooftop bar. Service is adequate throughout the ship, but you may not be bowled over by the attention, knowledge, or friendliness of crew members. There are, of course, long lines for the front and shore excursions desks early on during the cruise as many guests try to book activities. The Grand Pacific on Deck 7 is considered one of the Gem’s two main dining rooms. It’s a semi-formal, traditional restaurant with ocean views that is typically open for breakfast and dinner.

It was so bright, people were having epileptic fits looking at it! I know, 3 of them were mine....but i hadn't wanted another 597 to add to the ambiance! You have 3 kids and it's during the school break!

16.If you booked a massage you got free use of the spa...but only for 30 mins...should have been for the whole day as all the treatments were expensive. With so many bars and lounges to discover, finding your favorite may take a few days. Pop some bubbly and toast to the good life inside Magnum’s Champagne & Wine Bar. Kick back with a cocktail then dance it out at Spinnaker Lounge. Or work on perfecting your tan as you relax poolside at Topsiders Bar.

I would book our starboard-side club balcony cabin, again. It was a good size and in a good location, near the elevators. It was quiet except when the children were running up and down the halls. Unlike our previous cruises, we didn’t unpack our suitcases the entire trip, though the room itself has plenty of storage.

Just because we took our kids doesnt mean i cant moan about others on the ship.....there were too many for the amount of staff to cope with. Most of the Spanish children were running wild around the ship, jumping in and out of the jacuzzis, adult pool ect, and not one of NCL´s representatives said anything to control the situation. Its a wonderful value cruise, its hard to find anything this good for this price range - but ... You get what you pay for, I really enjoyed myself, my daughter wants to go back to tree tops to live - yeah the cruise had its staff issues, but Im not the sort of person to let these things ruin my holiday, Im better than that. Sick of revenue touting....even selling bingo tickets in the theatre just before the curtain went up. There was a 'pool casino' so you could even gamble by the pool, yoga, pilates, abs , cycling classes...all chargeable.

Start Planning Your Dream Wedding With Us

can you get married on a cruise

On a Caribbean cruise, life's a beach—actually hundreds—some long and straight, some tucked between cliffs, some brilliant white, some volcanic black. We can make sure all members of your group sit together in our Main Restaurant or any of the specialty dining restaurants. ✓ Fine dining, live music and shows, kids programs, fitness center, nightlife—it's all covered. This also allows for a redo if your planned shoreside wedding is affected by unforeseen circumstances the first time around. The further in advance you reserve your cabin, the sooner you can get the ball rolling toward marital bliss, and the more time you have to pay everything off and ensure all details are perfect. "We start with a package and design your ceremony to be just for you," says Bernal.

Couples getting married on a Norwegian cruise can add a conch shell aisle or fresh rose arch to shoreside ceremonies for extra charges. Wedding Coordinators are your point of contact during your cruise and will help guide you throughout the course of your wedding day to make sure your celebration goes off without a hitch. From custom bouquets to accents and arrangements, Royal Weddings offers an array of floral options to make your celebration more colorful.

What are some popular cruise lines for weddings?

Guests and friends can gift shore excursion credits, specialty-dining experiences, spa treatments and a private breakfast or dinner on the balcony. "We find most weddings are celebrated on board during embarkation day. This allows attendees who aren't sailing with the couple to visit the ship for the ceremony," says Matt Lupoli, of Carnival Cruise Line media relations. This option allows you to not only invite friends and family to your wedding but also enjoy a private honeymoon — without your mother-in-law or best man tagging along. The idea of a cruise wedding package is to offer some savvy budgeting. The cost of cruise weddings can vary widely, offering options for nearly every budget.

Timeless Wedding at Sea (Ceremony + Reception)

For instance, couples who want to plan a wedding less than 90 days from sailing pay a fee that varies based on the package chosen. Note, too, that wedding parties of more than 50 guests require an additional wedding coordinator for an additional fee. Beyond that, an additional surcharge applies to weddings and vow renewals scheduled in May, June, September and October.

can you get married on a cruise

The answer also depends on whether you want to get married while docked in a U.S. port, at sea in international waters, or in a port mid-sailing, as well as the critical issue of whom you would like to officiate. Captains, for example, can perform marriage ceremonies once the ship is in international waters, and the marriage will be legally recognized in the Bahamas. But Bahamian marriage licenses require at least 90 days to process, so you'll want to plan ahead if this is your choice.

Romantic Gestures

Its Wedding at Sea ceremony, priced from $3,099, is performed onboard while at sea and officiated by the ship captain on Breakaway, Getaway, Epic, Escape and Bliss. Norwegian's Wedding at Sea package also includes a group service coordinator, who can make dinner reservations, organize group seating at shows and otherwise assist the couple and their guests, in addition to overseeing the wedding. Marriage certificates will be issued by the Bahamas (additional fee). However, not all cruise lines are on the same boat when it comes to onboard wedding options. While some luxury cruise lines revel in the romance of cruise weddings, others may not offer this service.

Let's Cut The Cake!

Give us your number and a specialist will contact you as soon as possible about planning large group cruises and event cruises. If you’re a guest, take your cue on what to wear from the invitation and when in doubt, ask. Just because it’s a destination wedding in Hawaii doesn’t automatically mean flip-flops and shorts are acceptable. On the other hand, many couples enjoy the freedom to fuss less about gowns and tuxedos as they — and many of their nearest and dearest — get ready to voyage through Alaska or set sail on a tropical vacation. The decision to officiate a cruise wedding onboard or in port is a personal decision, but there are a few logistical differences between the two options. Packages typically employ the cruise line’s preferred vendors, so keep in mind that it might be difficult or impossible to handpick florists or photographers.

Additionally, several lines extend their wedding packages to include ceremonies in both domestic and international ports. The Celebrity Weddings program offers onboard ceremonies and destination weddings and are some of the most reasonably priced on this list for couples who don't necessarily need a huge list of bells and whistles. Shoreside weddings start at $1,895 and in-port weddings are pricier, including all of the same features plus roundtrip taxi transportation to the ceremony site for the couple.

Best Cruise Lines for Weddings

If a break in nature is needed, there’s no shortage of places to experience wildlife up close, head to Zoo Miami or Miami Seaquarium for interactive shows and encounters. With so many options and things to do, Miami is the perfect place to set the tone for your next cruise adventure. Many cruise lines, including Disney Cruise Lines, Carnival and Royal Caribbean, offer weddings and wedding renewals aboard the ship or at scenic tropical locations.

For those seeking a family-friendly atmosphere, MSC Cruises offers a perfect blend of entertainment and relaxation, suitable for guests of all ages. Whether you choose an onboard ceremony or a portside wedding, it’s about creating a day that reflects your love story and dreams. Both choices have their charm and allure, making your wedding day an unforgettable journey. For example, marrying in the Bahamas necessitates obtaining a Bahamian marriage license, a process that can take up to 90 days. Conversely, for weddings in U.S. ports, a state-issued marriage license suffices. When it comes to obtaining marriage licenses, the requirements vary depending on whether the wedding is in-port or at sea.

can you get married on a cruise

As an example, Carnival’s entry-level Signature Ceremony for up to eight guests is $1,799. Princess Cruises, known for being the “Love Boat,” offers a selection of wedding packages including a Timeless Wedding at Sea, also for up to eight guests, for $4,495. Most wedding packages are modifiable to add additional guests for a per-person fee. In terms of the packages, cruise weddings are a considerable value when it comes to how much is spent on the ceremony and reception in comparison to the average land-based wedding. However, an inherent part of a cruise wedding is the cruise, which can fluctuate in price depending if the betrothed are looking to splash out on a suite or opt for a more modest cabin.

Holidays -- such as New Year's Day, Valentine's Day, Easter, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Eve -- are also subject to higher rates. Note that the cost for in-port marriage licenses vary by destination, from $200 to $700; a shipboard marriage license costs $900. Additional services for floral arrangements, live music and photography can be arranged at an additional cost. Princess is a prime choice for cruise weddings because, of all the lines offering shipboard nuptials, it provides one of the best combinations of features, services and facilities. Princess' Tie the Knot packages are available on all ships, and most ships have dedicated wedding chapels.

If you’re hosting a cruise wedding, it’s important to think about how you’ll be transporting your valuable items, such as your rings, attire, and more. When it comes to these items, it’s essential to have them close by at all times—do not check valuable items and do not showcase them out in the open. You might also want to bring a steamer on your trip to ensure that you can straighten out any attire that may become wrinkled in transport. Ceremonies at sea officiated by the ship’s captain abide by the laws of the country where the ship is registered.

Alternatively, Princess Cruises' Tie the Knot Ashore package includes a ceremony at a beach or garden (or even at a glacier in Alaska) and transportation for the couple in addition to the standard services of a Tie the Knot ceremony. Note that receptions, photography packages and enhanced ceremony options are available at extra cost on Princess Cruises. Weddings in port are available on Carnival cruise ships only in select ports (including embarkation ports), and there's a limit to how many weddings can take place on the same day.
