The Essex House is a bustling hotel with more than 500 rooms. That said, with countless guests coming and going, personalised service wasn't a standout for me. A 24-hour fitness centre features cardio equipment, free weights, and exercise classes for a fee. If jetlag has gotten the best of you, spoil yourself with a massage, body wrap, facial or a steam session at PRIMP spa. A tony tavern features breakfast, lunch, dinner and froufrou cocktails, and there's an abundance of private event and meeting space to boot.

The heavily touristed crosstown street it sits on, Central Park South, is a mix of high-rise hotels and high-end apartment buildings. Retail is sparse on these park blocks, so there's very little indigenous street life; virtually everyone you'll see there will have a camera hanging around their neck. However, just two blocks east is Fifth Avenue, home to some of the most exclusive boutiques in New York City. Major attractions such as Times Square, Rockefeller Center, St Patrick’s Cathedral, and the MoMA can all be found within a 15-minute walk of the Essex House. There are nine subway lines within two blocks of the hotel, which makes getting to other sights farther afield -- including Grand Central Terminal, the Empire State Building, and Brooklyn Bridge – easy, fast, and cheap.

I’d note that this property is a bit older in design and furnishings, and its Executive Lounge more basic, compared to more modern JW Marriott properties around the world that I’ve stayed at. I largely enjoyed my stay here, in large part due to the amazing Manhattan Suite upgrade that I wasn’t expecting. Like most New York properties, this one is fairly expensive, though can be worth it on Bonvoy points or using a Free Night Award.
An oasis in the iconic Palm Springs desert, JW Marriott Desert Springs features a JW Garden filled with California-native plants and edible herbs, including the signature sage plant. Mindfulness and reflection are encouraged with hidden seating and peaceful walking paths. Strolling through the olive grove is a lovely way to connect with nature. JW Garden, the brand’s initiative to plant a garden in every one of its more than 100 properties around the world, is thriving.
A stately Marriott hotel occupying a 1920s Art Deco treasure boasts a fabulous address on Central Park South. A preferred choice for celebrities, this property positions guests in an area convenient to most anywhere; plus, the park views are nothing short of spectacular. Boasting sweeping Central Park views, this lavish two-bedroom suite offers all the comforts of a residential Manhattan apartment. The 270-room hotel offers Mexican hacienda style deluxe rooms and suites. Still, given the impressive suites and the heritage factor, I’d return in the future if the price and location were right for my needs – ideally to check out one of the rooms with a sweeping Central Park view.
A sophisticated lobby space feels almost palatial, with tray ceilings trimmed in gold, checkerboard stone floors, mammoth black-marble columns and a wide central hall that leads to the elevators and executive lounge. The neutral scheme of black, white, mahogany brown and creamy beige continues from the lobby and reception area through to the guestrooms. While the property has been refurbished throughout the years, much of its historical character remains. Southgate is located in the hotel and is a casual-upscale bar, restaurant, and lounge. The space has high ceilings, modern decor, and an excellent ambiance for evening cocktails. Seconds away from Central Park, this beautiful hotels puts guests right in the middle of the hustle and bustle of New York City. In fact, guests can have their cake and eat it too as the JW Marriott Essex House is close enough to all major New York City attractions but located in the quiet of Central Park.
The Executive Lounge is situated on the ground floor, and is open daily from 6am to 2pm. There’s a mix of two- and four-person dining tables, plus some high-top communal seating. A separate hallway leads from the living room to the bedroom, with the bathroom in the middle to the left. The Essex House is located near some of New York’s most celebrated attractions. I caught the hotel on an off-peak night, so I was able to redeem an anniversary Free Night Award from my Amex US Bonvoy Brilliant Card worth up to 50,000 Bonvoy points.
